Best Practices

We highlight practices and products that demonstrate a high degree of sustainability. We are looking for the most creative, innovative and effective green technologies and green practices out there, those that truly fit the definition of sustainability, which is: “Providing for the needs of the current generation without compromising the ability of future generations to provide for theirs”.

In some cases, these might be low tech solutions that are inexpensive and easy to implement, such as retrofitting buildings with passive cooling vents, lowering energy use and costs significantly. Or it might be innovative design that solves multiple problems, such as a wind generator that is also a solar collector. In the practices arena, it could include effective, win/win actions to get suppliers to go green, or to achieve zero waste.

Because of the damage already done to our ecosystems, practices that are regenerative – i.e. they not only create no harm to ecosystems, they improve them - are highly desirable. For instance, organic coffee grown with a number of other compatible crops increases yields and thus potential profits while reducing the need for land and creating a forest environment that captures carbon and produces many other benefits. This practice is not only highly ethical, it can also be highly profitable because the land is yielding 3-8 times what it would have if only coffee were grown on it, and costs of growing are also reduced because of organic methods used.
